“Do I Need This” When packing your possessions, say to yourself “Do I really need this?”. Our best advise to you is, “If you have to think about it, don’t take it”. You will only be paying us to move something that you’re either going to throw away or store back in the closet for another 5 or 10 years!
This rule is very important to follow on Interstate moves because you are charged by weight. Don’t move somthing that is going to cost you more than it’s worth, unless of course, it has sentimental value.
Heavy Items Don’t pack heavy items (such as books, records, papers, can goods, utensils, CD’s and DVD’s) in large cartons designed for light bulky items. Use book size cartons for these items. THE RULE IS HEAVY = SMALL, LIGHT AND BULKY IN LARGE CARTONS.
Dishes & Plates Don’t pack dishes, plates and similar items on top of each other. Always pack them on edge. The same goes for small glass pitchers. Glasses and stemware should be rolledinto paper or bubble wrap and placed gently in a box. Used liquor store boxes with separators are great for this type of packing. As a matter of advice, if you plan on using used cartons, try to get used to liquor cartons. They are strong and bug free. Beware of cartons from supermarkets and any food stores. You may think they are bug free, but YOU CANNOT SEE THE EGGS THAT MAY BE HIDDEN IN THE CORNERS. These boxes just are not worth the future trouble they may cause.
Lamps Do not pack lamps with shades attached. Remove the shades and nest them together placing them in a large carton. Do not try and pack other things with them. They tear and buckle very easily. Pack lamps separately.
Propane Do not ship propane containers, empty or full. It is unlawful to put such an item on a closed truck. Do not ship used paint, terpentine and other corrosive materials such as ammonia, bleach and strong cleaning materials. This is especially true if they have been opened.
Shipping A Car If you are shipping a car interstate you can load items in the trunk. But we strongly advise you not to leave items in the passenger section. Most cars are transported on open auto carriers and are subject to break-ins if items are visible when the transport trucks make occasional stops.
Moving By Car If you are driving your car, follow the same rule as above. If you do store items in the passenger section and stop overnight at a hotel or motel, be sure to bring those items into the room with your luggage. Don’t become a target!
